Mr Mosa Mabuza is a qualified geologist with a BSc (Hons) in Geology from the University of the Witwatersrand, a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management, and has completed the Global Executive Development Programme at the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS). He brings extensive mineral exploration experience across multiple regional jurisdictions spanning SADC, West Africa and Canada, among others.
He assumed official duties in 2006 as Director of Mineral Economics in the then Department of Minerals and Energy, and later became Deputy Director-General of Mineral Policy and Investment Promotion in 2012. During his tenure as a senior official he was tasked with leading the preliminary strategy for the sustainable development and meaningful transformation of South Africa’s mining industry, with emphasis on competitive growth and transformation as mutually reinforcing concepts. This work included the development of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Amendment Bill and the assessment of the progress and impact of the implementation of the Mining Charter in 2009 and 2015, which respectively provided the evidence-based value proposition for the amendments to the 2010 and 2017 Mining Charters.
In November 2016, Mr Mabuza was deployed to the Council for Geoscience and now serves as CEO of the CGS (since July 2017). He is currently working with his colleagues to champion the refocused geoscientific programme that seeks to optimise developmental impact aligned with the national developmental priorities.
